Useful for layout planning, not final production sign-off

Page count and paper thickness can give you a workable spine estimate before the printer has confirmed the job. That is enough to start a cover layout without pretending the number is final.

The same page count can produce a different spine

Thicker paper makes a thicker book, and binding methods can change the calculation. Page count alone is not enough.

Before you lock the cover design

  • Use the actual body-paper specification.
  • Check whether the printer’s calculation includes cover stock, glue or other allowances.
  • Confirm any minimum spine requirement for the binding method.

A rough example

If 100 pages correspond to about 50 sheets and the paper is roughly 0.1 mm per sheet, the body stack is around 5 mm. Use the printer’s own value for the final cover.
