Convention box count estimator

Estimate shipping box count from total item volume and box dimensions.

Use tool

How to use it

Estimate how many boxes you need from total cargo volume, internal box dimensions and a usable fill percentage. It is a rough planning tool for books, merchandise and event supplies rather than a packing simulation.

  1. Enter the total cargo volume in liters.
  2. Enter the box’s internal width, depth and height in centimeters.
  3. Set the expected fill percentage and calculate effective capacity and box count.
Box capacity
width × depth × height converted to liters
Fill rate
greater than 0 and up to 100%
Box count

Scope
Volume-based estimate

80 L in 45 × 35 × 30 cm boxes at 75% fill needs about 3 boxes

A box is about 47.25 L in theory. At 75% usable fill, effective capacity is about 35.44 L, so 80 L requires 3 boxes after rounding up.

Real packing depends on shape, padding and how items stack. Weight limits and box strength are not included, and books can hit a weight limit before the box looks full.

Fill percentage accounts for unusable space

Real cargo rarely occupies every cubic centimeter. Mixed shapes, padding and handling space reduce usable capacity, so the fill rate lets you build that loss into the estimate.

Partial boxes round up

If the calculation says 2.1 boxes, you still need a third physical box. The tool therefore rounds the required count upward.

Weight is a separate constraint

Books and paper goods can become too heavy before volume is exhausted. Check carrier, venue and box weight limits separately.

Use internal dimensions

Internal dimensions represent the space available to the cargo. External carton dimensions can overstate usable capacity because of wall thickness and structure.

Irregular items need a more conservative fill rate

Poster tubes, bulky merchandise and mixed shapes leave more gaps. Lowering the fill percentage usually gives a safer box-count estimate.
