Fuel trip cost calculator

Estimate fuel cost from distance, efficiency and fuel price.

How to use it

Estimate round-trip driving fuel from one-way distance, fuel efficiency, fuel price and number of round trips. It is useful for event transport or travel planning when you want the fuel portion of the cost.

  1. Enter the one-way distance in km.
  2. Enter fuel efficiency in km/L and fuel price per liter.
  3. Enter a whole-number round-trip count of at least 1, then calculate.
Total distance
one-way distance × 2 × round trips
Fuel
total distance ÷ km/L
Fuel cost
fuel × price, rounded up

tolls, parking, vehicle rental and ownership costs

120 km one way at 15 km/L and 180/L costs about 2,880 for one round trip

The total distance is 240 km and fuel use is 16 L. At 180 per liter, the estimated fuel cost is 2,880.

Real fuel economy changes with traffic, load, speed, climate control and weather. An observed km/L figure from similar driving is usually more useful than a brochure rating.

One round trip means going there and coming back once

A 120 km one-way journey becomes 240 km for one round trip and 480 km for two. This input model is not intended for a one-way-only journey.

Use realistic fuel economy

Published test-cycle economy can differ from actual use. A recent average from your own vehicle gives a better planning estimate.

Update the fuel price for the trip

Fuel prices vary by location and date. Long journeys may involve refueling in a different price area.

Other driving expenses are separate

Tolls, parking, ferries, rental fees, maintenance and vehicle depreciation are outside this calculation and should be added separately when total trip cost matters.

Calculate different vehicles separately

For a convoy with different cars, estimate each vehicle with its own efficiency and then add the fuel costs.
