What to know before using it

Separating host, port, path, query and fragment helps diagnose redirects and tracking parameters. Query and fragment have different roles; fragments are normally not sent in the HTTP request.

Common failure points

  • Do not share URLs containing credentials or tokens.
  • A relative URL needs a base URL to resolve completely.
  • Percent-encoding differences can change actual values.

Practical example

For a UTM link, verify host/path first, then inspect query parameters for unexpected entries.
