Convert Text, Binary, Decimal Bytes, and Hex

Convert between text and binary, decimal, or hexadecimal bytes.

Enter a value

Numeric input is interpreted as bytes from 0 to 255.

How to use it

Compare UTF-8 text with binary, decimal and hexadecimal byte representations. This is a byte-oriented tool, not a general arbitrary-integer base converter: numeric values represent individual bytes from 0 to 255.

  1. Choose UTF-8 text, Binary bytes, Decimal bytes or Hex bytes.
  2. For byte input, separate values with spaces or commas.
  3. Run the tool to see text, 8-bit binary, decimal bytes and two-digit hexadecimal together.
Numeric byte range
0–255
Binary example
01001000 01101001
Decimal example
72 105
Hex example
48 69 or contiguous 4869

Hi corresponds to HEX 48 69 and decimal 72 105

Entering Hi as UTF-8 text produces 48 69 in Hex, 72 105 in Decimal and 01001000 01101001 in Binary.

This is not a tool for converting one huge integer such as decimal 123456 into another radix. Invalid digits and values outside the byte range are rejected. Byte sequences that are not valid UTF-8 may display replacement characters in the Text line.

Useful for seeing what text looks like at the byte level

ASCII characters usually use one byte while Japanese and many other characters use multiple UTF-8 bytes. The output makes that difference visible.

Separate decimal bytes explicitly

Input such as 72 105 or 72,105 is much clearer than a long unseparated decimal string. Each number is interpreted as a byte, not as one large decimal integer.

Binary and hex use byte-sized groups

Output binary is padded to eight bits and hex to two digits per byte. A long contiguous hex string can be read in two-digit groups, and contiguous binary in eight-bit groups.

Invalid digits are not silently guessed

A binary value containing 2, invalid hex characters or a decimal byte above 255 is rejected instead of being partially interpreted.

It is not an encoding detector

The Text line interprets the bytes as UTF-8. Use a dedicated encoding tool when the source may actually be Shift_JIS or another character encoding.
