Find Missing or Extra Columns in CSV Headers

Compare two CSV headers and find missing, extra, renamed, or reordered columns.

Compare two CSVs

Files are processed in your browser and are not sent to our server.

How to use

Use this when an import suddenly fails or when a vendor publishes a new CSV template and you need to see what changed in the first row. It compares header names, missing/extra columns, and exact column order.

  1. Choose the known-good CSV as A and the file you want to check as B.
  2. Run the comparison to see both headers, columns missing from B, columns added in B, and whether the order matches.
  3. Use the receiving system’s latest template as the source of truth when fixing differences.

Input and settings example

CSV A: name,email CSV B: email,name → Compare the different column order.

This compares headers; it is distinct from comparing every data row.

When is this useful?

A one-character header change can break an otherwise valid import. Checking the first row first is much faster than investigating every data value when the real problem is a renamed, added, removed, or reordered column.

The important thing to know

The main file comparison trims surrounding spaces and compares header text and order. A header can contain the same names but still fail the “same order” check if the positions changed.

What it does not prove

  • It compares the header row, not data types or required/optional rules.
  • Case sensitivity may matter to the receiving system; the page also includes a helper comparison where case can be ignored.
  • Duplicate header names still deserve a manual schema check.

Example

If template A is id,name, email and B is name,id,phone, the result makes the problem concrete: email is missing, phone is extra, and the order changed.

How to read the result

“Missing / Extra” is a name-set difference; “Same order” also checks positions. If nothing is missing or extra but Same order is NO, the same columns exist in a different order. Whether that matters depends on the importer contract.
